* 3rd - Test Match - 1970 / 71 December 31, January 1, 2. Australia V's England at the MCG, Melbourne. Did you know that - this match was abandoned on the third day after almost continuous rain had prevented any play. The captains tossed on the first day and Illingworth, winning the toss, put Australia in. The abandonment was ordered by a conference of members of the Australian Board, led by Sir Donald Bradman, and the M.C.C. manager with two visiting M.C.C. officials, Sir Cyril Hawker and G. O. Allen. It was later announced that a 40-over match would be played on the last day of the Test, and that an additional Test would be inserted into the touring programme in place of the four-day return match against Victoria and the one-day game at Euroa. Result: Match abandoned without a ball bowled 6-Test series level 0-0 (1 abandoned) Toss: England Umpires: TF Brooks and LP Rowan Close of Play: Day 1: No play : Day 2: No play : Day 3: Match abandoned Australia team: *WM Lawry, KR Stackpole, IM Chappell, KD Walters, IR Redpath, GS Chappell, +RW Marsh, AA Mallett, GD McKenzie, JW Gleeson, AN Connolly. England team: G Boycott, BW Luckhurst, JH Edrich, MC Cowdrey, BL D'Oliveira, *R Illingworth, +APE Knott, JA Snow, K Shuttleworth, P Lever, DL Underwood. - Rain prevented play starting as the players were entering the field. A conference between the Australian Board, the MCC Manager, and two MCC Officials lead to the match being abandoned and replaced by a limited overs match which was later recognised as the first ever ODI.
- The MCC tour schedule was rearranged to include an additional Test at Melbourne on 21,22,23,25,26 January.
- Whilst the Australian Board of Control recognised this match as an official Test to be included in match statistics, nearly all statisticians around the world do not do so.
