The thunderbolt kid..............Another legend of the WDCA opens up 20/02/2008
| THE name Geoff Welch is synonymous in local cricketing circles with the image of a thick set man, much in the mould of the great Mervyn Hughes, thundering towards the popping crease, a glint of malice in his eyes and a look of determination across his face, ready to unleash another thunderbolt at an already terrified batsman. In the history of the WDCA, few have caused so much terror with the ball as the now amalgamated United Cricket Club’s opening speedster. With moustache flowing, curly locks, and leather bullet loaded, the potential for a wicket was always a ball by ball proposition for Welch, who often took delight in rattling the nerves of the poor soul at the other end with a well placed bouncer, or an unplayable yorker. In 215 A Grade games for United, Welch took a staggering 646 career wickets including match figures of 14/28 against the City Colts in the 1976/77 season, with his best figures in a single innings being 9/26, yet again against the Colts. However, for all the sleepless nights he caused opposition captains and the many bumps and bruises he inflicted on those who dared to face up to him, Geoff was, and still is, known as a gentle and kindly man off the field.
