Milo Have a Go Cricket

Milo HAG

What is “Have-A-Go Cricket”?

Have-A-Go Cricket is a modified cricket program that has been developed to enable children at an early age to further develop their co-ordination and motor skills. The emphasis of the program is to have fun with groups of children of the same age eg. Kinder, but at the same time developing skills through participation. Have-A-Go cricket is suited to 5-7 year old children.
What is “Have-A-Game Cricket”?
Have-A-Game Cricket is a modified cricket program that has been developed for the older children of 8-10 years of age to bridge the gap between Have-A-Go and under age club cricket. The WDCA will offer this program to our older age groups through our clubs to provide a link to our Under 11 non-competitive teams. These sessions will focus more upon the game of cricket and the development of game skills. The WDCA has been fortunate to have been involved with Cricket Victoria at an early stage in the development of this new program as a result of the excellent program the club has been running for a number of years.
How safe is it?
Modified equipment is used right through the age groups from Kinder through to grade 6 at primary. At Have-A-Go level children will be using plastic bats and soft rubber balls. At Have-A-Game level, the children are wearing full equipment including pads and helmets but only using a modified softer ball known as an “incrediball” We promote sun awareness with slip slop slap, ensuring that children wear both hats and sunscreen.
When & how often is the Program?
The program runs for 12 weeks, 7 weeks prior to Christmas each year inclusive and resuming in late  January each year for five weeks.
The program normally runs on Friday evenings from 6.00pm.
There are several WDCA clubs involved in the Milo HAG program.
Please check with your own WDCA club for their Milo HAG program.

How much does it Cost?
The total cost of the program is $55 per child, each child receives a cricket bat, a ball, Bucket Hat, CD-Rom, and other giveaways. The WDCA is likely to provide the Have-A-Game children with a special club shirt this season as an added incentive. $35 of the $40 goes direct to the Cricket Victoria to cover these items and some insurance. The balance is used to provide trophies to participants, cordial during the sessions, and other running costs including equipment. A long way for $5 each to go, hence this is supplemented by raffles and sausage sizzles etc, to keep the cost down to all.
CricKids
Born out of its partnership with the Federal Government's Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, the CricKids Playing in Harmony curriculum unit is a Cricket Australia initiative that is designed to promote the Living in Harmony message in schools.

It is a program that encourages children to reflect on important social issues and celebrates cultural diversity and inclusion. It is designed to empower students and challenges them to lead the way and make a difference in their community.

The broad aims of the Living in Harmony initiative are...
  • Commitment - Uniting for Australia 's future and gaining a greater understanding and awareness our dynamic multicultural society, our democratic system, and our freedoms, language and laws
  • Goodwill - The bonds that holds us together; celebrating community harmony and our commitment to embracing traditional Australian values - justice, equality, fairness and mateship
  • Understanding - It starts with you; upholding your culture and traditional heritage while embracing respect for and appreciation of others.
  • Diversity - Australians have been born here or migrated here; we come from around 200 different backgrounds
  • Community - The spirit of cooperation; taking a stand against racism, prejudice and intolerance
  • Harmony - Bringing all together to celebrate the many faces of Australia and treating those around us with consideration and dignity

In 2006, Cricket Australia invited 27 schools from around the nation to pilot the CricKids Playing in Harmony program, with classes ranging from Year 3 to Year 10. Participating schools were nominated to be part of the national pilot by their state or territory cricket association.

Participating classroom teachers and state and territory regional cricket offices attended a professional development day in Victoria to learn more about the program and receive a full briefing of the curriculum resources and how to conduct the Event Day component. The Event Day sees participating school invite neighbouring schools to a day of cricket activity and enjoyment, providing a carnival atmosphere for students to also display the leadership skills developed throughout the CricKids Playing in Harmony program.

Piloting of the CricKids Playing in Harmony program in 2006

The CricKids Playing in Harmony pilot reached 117 teachers who were actively involved in teaching the program, 2502 students who were undertaking the curriculum and 5,038 students from feeder schools who were involved in Event Days around the country.

"Last week I attended one of the pilot programs in Canberra.
How impressed was I with the organisation, operation and commitment of the students participating in the program. Frankly, in my 13 years in PR and marketing I have rarely seen such enthusiasm from kids, parents and teachers. It was a "money can't buy experience" for both Cricket Australia and the department. You simply could not "buy" the authenticity and credibility that our collective messages received, summed up so eloquently by the Principal at the end of the day."

"The kids went NUTS when they got their workbooks. One girl in Year 7 exclaimed, and I quote, 'This is the best book I've ever got at school. It's cool' "
Dan Rogers
Western Australian, Embleton Primary School

"Being a cricket lover, it was easy to get excited about a program like this, but it was really the Living in Harmony components - and not the cricket - I got most satisfaction out of."
Ashley Brettell
Australian Capital Territory, Majura Primary School

"I thoroughly enjoyed teaching the program to our Year 7 classes; a very positive response to all activities was felt each week as the activities provided the children with something different from their normal school activities. Fresh challenges were the key to the program and the Event Day was well worth all the prior preparation when we saw how well the Year 7 children conducted themselves on the day when given the responsibility of running the event."
