Benalla holds firm..... Mellington hundred sees visitors hold on to memorable win

Written by JEREMY WILSON.

WANGARATTA fell agonisingly short of victory in the Junior Country Week under 17 division one grand final on Friday afternoon, falling to Benalla by just one run at the WJ Findlay Oval.

In a tense finish, Wangaratta required seven runs off the final over to claim another JCW crown, or just six for the tie, which would also have given them victory on aggregate.

But in an action-packed climax, Wangaratta’s Cameron Bishop was left needing two runs off the final ball to tie the match.

Bishop smashed a ball from Benalla’s Tom McCorkell back at the bowler, however, the ricochet fell to a fielder and the Wangaratta player was run out attempting the second run.

Earlier Benalla made a total of 7/184 set up on the back of an unbeaten century from Josh Mellington (102*) while Ben Gleeson provided support with 27.

But even that knock didn’t look to be enough to get the win for Benalla as Wangaratta openers Declan Stewart and Ben Chambeyron got off to a flying start.

Stewart (40) and Chambeyron (45) were 0/70 after 15 overs and an easy win for Wangaratta looked on the cards.

However, Benalla’s savior with the ball was captain Jake Martin, who came in and turned the match on its head with his off-spinners.

He got rid of both openers and after his 10 over spell had finished he returned the amazing figures of 5/14 as the game headed for a close finish.

Fraser Elliott was the only other Wangaratta batsman to get going, making 40 before falling to McCorkell after looking like guiding his side to victory.

In the under 15 division one final, Wangaratta overcame a hard-working CAW Wright team to claim victory by six wickets.

CAW Wright batted first and made a solid total of 9/130 with Tom Williams (3/24) the best of the Wangaratta bowlers.

In reply, Wangaratta got off to a good start with Williams (20) and Cameron McMahon (13) setting the team on a path to victory.

Ben Henwood contributed 13 before being dismissed while Riley Judd (21) also provided good support.

But again Wangaratta’s best batsman was Damien Jenvey with the Bright youngster hitting an unbeaten 37 to lead his side to the crown.

In the other matches Wangaratta went down to Wangaratta 2 in the under 17 division two final with Corey Southern (50) and Ben Clarke (43) leading the way for the victors.

Caleb Newton-Allan smashed 89 for Wangaratta 1 but it wasn’t enough to stave off defeat.

And in the under 15 division two final Wangaratta was no match for CAW, being beaten by 10 wickets.

WDCA junior sides on top in junior cricket week - 9th Jan'08

WANGARATTA has made a great start to the North East Junior Country Week with all four sides in great positions to make the final of their divisions.

In the under 17 division one, Wangaratta opened its account with a disappointing loss to Cricket Albury/Wodonga District.

Batting first at Kiewa, Wangaratta could only muster 131 with Fraser Elliott (44) the only batsman to find any time of substance at the crease.

In reply, CAW District were struggling at 6/73 thanks to tight bowling from Jacob Schonafinger (3/12), but a 60-run partnership between Max Krueger (29) and Damien Morrison (39) ended the match.

In yesterday’s game Wangaratta gave itself a chance of making the final with a big 65-run win over CAW Provincial.

Wangaratta to fight for final - 9th Jan'08

WANGARATTA and District Cricket Association can advance into the final of the North East Junior Country Week with a win over Benalla and District today at Gardens Oval Benalla.

Yesterday’s crushing victory over Cricket Albury-Wodonga Provincial means the WDCA’s destiny is in their own hands.

A win for Benalla will also see them advance into the final.

WDCA skipper Sam Stewart was looking forward to the challenge of keeping their chances alive against the in-form BDCA outfit.

“It is definitely a big thing that it is up to us,” he said.

“Our batting needs to improve a little bit.”

When play finally got under way in the bout between WDCA and Provincial after an hour long delay because of a wet pitch it was decided to play the match in four quarters.

Matt Gathercole (0-18), who appears destined to miss the rest of the week after a call-up to the North East Knights, and Ben Paull (2-34) ensured WDCA got off to a strong start in the opening 25 overs.

In reply Stewart (18) and Kayde Surrey (23) got the Wangaratta team off to a flying start and Matt McCormack (53 retired) ensured they continued the momentum until the end of their 25 overs.

In their second stint at the crease the Provincial found the going tough and when in form middle order batsman Dean Nicholson was run out for eight they were in big trouble, being bundled out for 130.

WDCA continued its strong batting display in their second dig with Dylan Bursill (22) and Tim Allan (20no) leading the way.

“I was pretty happy with the way we played. we rocked up and the wicket was wet, which was disappointing,” Stewart said.

“We won the toss, which was a good toss to win and we kept them to a pretty low score with some good, tight bowling and then got off to a good start when we batted.”

The pick of the Provincial bowlers were Josh Steadman (2-23) and James Trotman (3-42.

Nicholson the star in CAW’s tie - 8th January, 2008.

CRICKET Albury-Wodonga Provincial and Benalla and District opened the North East Junior Country Week series with a thrilling tie in their under-17 division one clash at Xavier High School yesterday.

Set a daunting 235 for victory after St Patrick’s young gun Dean Nicholson narrowly missed a century, Benalla responded superbly to the task and required eight runs off the final over to pinch an unlikely victory.

It failed by the narrowest of margins when Peter Holt restricted the visitors to seven runs in one of the best finishes to a country week match for several years.

Both teams had periods of dominance during the 50-over clash with CAW Provincial on the ropes early when it crashed to 4-46.

But Nicholson stood resolute under pressure and his 90, with support from Kylin Morey (30) and Nick Flood (21), enabled the hosts to fight their way out of trouble and compile 234.

Nicholson’s score came only weeks after he made his maiden century for St Patrick’s against Tallangatta in CAW’s under-17 competition and he looks set to become a prized wicket this week.

CAW Provincial’s saviour was the 57 extras it received, with Benalla and District assisting the opposition with 14 byes, nine leg-byes, three wides and 31 no-balls.

Medium-pacer Farren Priest was the pick of the bowlers with 4-17 off nine overs.

Benalla and District started the chase on a positive note through Nick Abley and Dean Rodger before Jamie Patterson (52) and Josh Mellington (40) kept the runs ticking over on a fast outfield.

But it slumped from 2-133 to 7-194 and only some late resistance from Priest, Zack Treacy and Wade Gladstone enabled the visitors to salvage a tie.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cricket Albury-Wodonga District started the defence of its title with a 36-run victory against Wangaratta at Kiewa yesterday.

After bundling the visitors out for 131, CAW District was always in command.

Wangaratta skipper Sam Stewart said his team simply failed to make enough runs, with the exception of topscorer Fraser Elliott (44).

“We didn’t make enough and paid for it,” he said.

“I didn’t think we were totally out of the game at any stage though, so hopefully we can play better in our next game.”

CAW District made 167 in reply thanks to handy knocks from Damien Morrison (39), Max Kreuger (29) and Jeff Worley (22).

In today’s division 1 matches, CAW Provincial takes on Wangaratta at Corowa’s Ball Park and Benalla and District does battle with CAW District at Benalla.
