Despite rain halting its final match, WDCA heads through to the final

21st January, 2008.

ALTHOUGH its final match was cancelled because of rain yesterday, the WDCA representative side has gone through to the Ensign Cup final on run rate.

And although disappointed with not being given a chance to play, captain Wayne Ashton was delighted that his side would be travelling to Benalla for the final on Sunday, February 24.

The match was called off on Saturday night amid a torrential downpour that left grounds across the region saturated.

The full consequence of the rain was not realised until yesterday afternoon, but that will not dampen the sense of relief as the WDCA now prepares to defend its title in earnest.

"To be honest I didn’t know that we were second on the ladder," Ashton confided.

"But I am very happy now that we are going through to the final.

"It turns out we came second on run rate, thanks to a big win over Benalla.

"I just wanted to get on the park and concentrate on getting a win."

However, Ashton said that he and his side were ready to take on Albury Wodonga Colts, and eager to take the game to them on Sunday.

"We wanted to go out there," he said.

"I was on the phone all day on Saturday and we did our best.

"All I was worried about was winning the game.

"It would have been great to get a win, especially ahead of country week.

"So I was a little disappointed not to get on the park.

"But, it suits me down to the ground that we are going to the final."

Despite the disappointment, Ashton is looking forward to pitting his side against some tough opposition.

Given that the majority of his side is also playing in country week, Ashton would have welcomed the opportunity to give his side the chance to prove itself.

"We only got to play two games and in the first there were a few unavailable," Ashton explained.

"But it would be nice to think that we can get some form in country week and beat Albury in the final."

Albury Wodonga tops the ladder, while Wangaratta and Albury Wodonga Colts tie on points, both with one win and one loss each.

Now it is up to Ashton and his side to make the most of their good fortune and defeat Albury to reaffirm Wangaratta’s cricket pride.

WANGARATTA’S Ensign Cup defence has been brought back to life following its 100 run win over Benalla yesterday at the Norm Minns Oval.

Wangaratta captain Wayne Ashton won the toss and elected to bat on what he said was a belter of a pitch.

And, under perfect batting conditions, Wangaratta got off to a near perfect start.

Justin Triffitt (39) and Ashton’s (47) opening stand of 63 set the scene for Adrian Ryan who came out to bat with all guns blazing.

In a chanceless innings, Ryan hit 110 not out, guiding Wangaratta to 290 from their 50 overs, a total that was always going to be hard to chase down.

Ryan’s work-rate was the key to his innings, his runs coming at the expense of just seven fours, the rest of his total made running between the wickets.

Tim Wood, who has been in sensational form this year, hit a quick-fire half century, his 53 including two crunching sixes.

Needing a solid opening in response to stand any chance of survival, Benalla stumbled as both openers were removed by Neil Membrey (3/44) with just seven runs on the board.

Andrew Squires batted very well for his 55, but Matt Brown, who was brought in to replace the injured Nathan Younger, took 3/40 to ensure that their target would remain beyond them.

"We batted well and I was very happy with that," Ashton said after the game.

"The wicket was fantastic, but everyone bowled and fielded very well to keep them under 200.

"We set ourselves a target and everyone did their part.

Young Colts get off to a top start. 19.11.07

THIS year’s Ensign Cup competition got off to a disrupted start yesterday, with the clash between Cricket Albury-Wodonga and Benalla at Benalla cancelled without a ball being bowled due to heavy rain.

Thankfully, drier conditions confronted players from Wangaratta and the newly formed CAW Colts teams at Cheesley Oval Wodonga.

Wangaratta, who won the competition last year, batted first on a decent batting wicket but lost a steady stream of wickets against some spirited bowling, eventually bowled out for 162.

Mount Beauty off-spinner Udara Silva caused plenty of trouble for the visitors, flighting the ball well and landing it on a teasing length.

He also extracted significant spin from the wicket, making him a difficult prospect to score against and finished with 4-26 from 10 overs.

In reply, a century partnership for the second wicket between in-form St Patrick’s opener Stuart Rixon (66) and East Albury’s Liam Scammell (47) put the Colts in the box seat for a well-deserved victory.

However there was one last twist in the contest after the dismissal of Scammell, with Josh Lee and Josh Mallichan both falling for ducks soon after.

When Rixon fell, closely followed by Trent Ball (7), Wangaratta dared to dream of a magnificent comeback victory.

Greta captain Aidan Ryan was the catalyst of the dramatic collapse, taking 4-36 from 10 overs but it was too little, too late for Wangaratta, as the Colts steadied to win by four wickets.

CAW chairman of selectors Grant Ball said the win was a promising result for the Colts.

“It’s the first time we’ve fielded a colts (23 years and under) team,” he said.

“We thought it would be a good idea to develop some of the great young talent coming through in the region.

“A lot of our rep players are getting on a bit now so it’s fantastic to see the young fellows doing well,” he said.

The CAW senior team and Benalla will share the points after their wash-out.

The next round of the competition will be held on December 9 and will see the two CAW teams play against each other at Lavington and Wangaratta battle Benalla.

Hill fires Wang to Ensign Cup win !
LEADING Wangaratta and District runscorer Ross Hill’s phenomenal run with the bat has continued.Hill steered the association to a six-wicket victory against Cricket Albury-Wodonga in the Ensign Cup final at the Norm Minns Oval yesterday.

Hill, who has 592 runs at 39.47 for Rovers-United this season, blazed 73 to help his team successfully reel in an imposing target of 9-238.

The Wangaratta Rovers footballer peppered the boundaries on a lightning outfield and was instrumental in the home team making the target with four overs to spare.

Captain Wayne Ashton said last night he was happy to hold CAW to 238 with batsman of the calibre of Hill in the batting line-up.

“He’s having a great run,” Ashton said.

“The way he’s going he’ll probably come out and kick 20 goals in the first match of the footy season for Rovers.

“He was fantastic, but I thought the pass mark was probably 250 runs and our bowlers did really well to keep them to below that.

“We have a great group of blokes together at the moment and it’s good to win the final.”

Wangaratta set a cracking pace early in its chase to be 1-56 off 10 overs and Hill, Chris Jones (46), Lee Schmidt (28), Tim Wood (29 not out) and Justin Solimo (28 not out) kept the momentum flowing throughout the innings.

The only hiccup was when Hill and Schmidt were both dismissed with the score on 180.

CAW’s best performer with the ball was Rhys Jones, who captured 2-31 off 10 overs.

After winning the toss and batting, Michael Spiteri’s charges made a horror start with Julian Day and Cameron Lodding being dismissed without scoring a run.

Ashton is hopeful the victory could be the start of a golden era for the association.

Cup’s future up in the air.............................Revised format in the pipeline.

WANGARATTA and District may have taken out the final Ensign Cup series with plans under way to form a revamped competition next season.

VCCA administrator Peter McCudden said yesterday a draw involving Cricket Albury-Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla, Seymour, Murray Valley, Kyabram, Shepparton and Campaspe had been put on the drawing board.

The Region 5 and 6 associations are expected to vote on the proposal in coming weeks.

“It’s difficult to see the Ensign Cup continuing after only having three teams involved this year,” McCudden said.

“Wangaratta only played one match before the final.

“It would be a higher standard competition which everyone strives for and the response at Sunday’s Ensign Cup final was very positive towards the change.

“I would be surprised if Wangaratta didn’t vote for it.”

Cricket Albury-Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla took part in this year’s Ensign Cup after Yarrawonga withdrew from the annual series.

Alexandra-Mansfield has also dropped out in recent years.

McCudden said regional managers Rhys Miller and Rohan Larkin had been working on the proposal and had been pleased with the response.

“It will go back to the associations at a regional meeting and to me it has a lot of merit,” he said.

The most likely stumbling block could be travel as CAW now takes part in Canberra-based Konica Cup.

McCudden said the competition would include three home and away matches before a final.

Meanwhile, Wangaratta captain Wayne Ashton believes Sunday’s Ensign Cup victory against CAW could be the springboard the association needs for a golden era of representative cricket.

Ashton said officials worked hard to replace some of the association’s finest performers in the past few years and is confident the present nucleus has what it takes to maintain the high standards.

The six-wicket victory came after Wangaratta narrowly failed to win promotion from division three at Country Week at Benalla late last month.

Tim Wood, Lee Schmidt, Jeremy Carr, Jon Hyde and Chris Jones are all under 23 and held in high regard.

“There is a very good nucleus and that’s something we needed to build,” Ashton said.
